Changing Plans

Helen: Changing plans

Helen’s primary care doctor changed medical groups and she could no longer see her cardiologist. She decided to look for a new plan that would allow her to keep both doctors.

Helen, 79, is a member of a Medicare Advantage HMO and has been seeing the same doctor for the past 16 years. “I have a wonderful relationship with her. She really cares about me.” Helen also sees a cardiologist for her heart condition. “When I was hospitalized years ago, he was in charge of my treatment. I thought he was great, so I’ve had him as my cardiologist ever since.”

But then Helen’s doctor changed medical groups. “My HMO told me that the doctors I see had to be from the same medical group. I don’t want a new doctor. I am looking for a new plan that lets me see the doctors I like, because that’s what’s most important to me.”

More about choosing a plan.
