Marilyn: Choosing a primary care doctor

Marilyn, 52, did not feel comfortable with her primary care doctor, who had been recommended by a friend. But she did not really know who else to choose. Then she needed a same-day appointment for a cough that was going into her chest. It turned out the doctor was new to the plan and had just recently started practicing, so she was taking new patients. “She has been my doctor for eight years now.”

Steve: Choosing a primary care doctor

Steve, a 46-year-old man with HIV, needed to find a new doctor after his physician retired. He asked his HIV-positive friends for recommendations. “It turned out that several people I knew were working with this one doctor, and they all had great things to say about him. When I met him, I liked him right away because he looked me straight in the eye and said he believed that figuring out the right regimen and strategy for me was something we had to decide on together.”
